Sanaa Lathan’s characteristic directorial debut is ready to make its world premiere on the Toronto Worldwide Movie Competition. A press launch introduced that “On the Come Up,” the story of a gifted rapper making an attempt to make a reputation for herself, will premiere on the forty seventh version of the fest, set to happen September 8-18.
“On the Come Up” tells the story of Bri (Jamila C. Grey), 16-year-old lady who “makes an attempt to take the battle rap scene by storm as a way to carry up her household and do proper by the legacy of her father — a neighborhood hip hop legend whose profession was reduce quick by gang violence. However when her first hit music goes viral for all of the improper causes, she finds herself torn between the authenticity that acquired her this far and the false persona that the business needs to impose upon her,” per the fest.
Kay Oyegun (“This Is Us”) penned the script, which relies on Angie Thomas’ best-selling novel of the identical identify. Thomas can also be the creator of “The Hate U Give,” the supply materials for the critically acclaimed 2018 movie starring Amandla Stenberg.
